Deltarune is accessible across different devices, so players can jump in no matter where they play.
The story behind Deltarune
Toby Fox’s Undertale captivated the gaming community with its branching storylines, quirky humor, and deeply emotional beats. That narrative flexibility, paired with a strong plot and unforgettable characters, turned it into a cult favorite.
The game’s success built a devoted fanbase, which remained relatively quiet until Toby Fox surprised everyone with the launch of Deltarune, a new adventure that channels the same spirit while charting a very different path.
Is Deltarune a prequel to Undertale?
While most people assume Deltarune to be the prequel or sequel to Undertale, it is anything but. The game is set in a different world, with another storyline and new characters. Though some old characters do make an appearance, they’re only in supporting roles. Apart from Undertale’s soundtrack and sense of humor, everything else is fresh. Think of it more as a narrative remix than a continuation.
What is Deltarune?
Modeled after 8-bit games like Mario and Metroid, Deltarune’s layout is a trip down memory lane. It even has throwback music to support the classic design. While the graphics and imagery are old, the references and humor that you’ll come across are quite modern, firmly placing Deltarune in this century.
The plot is similar to that of Undertale, wherein the protagonist falls into an underworld of monsters and has to somehow find a way home. There are four primary characters in the game, Susie, Lancer, Ralsei, and Kris, and the story revolves around them. They’re well-rounded individuals and their dynamics and emotions push the game forward.
Interesting gameplay and storyline
From the beginning, it’s clear that Deltarune shares a spirit with Undertale but establishes its own world and tone. Kris, the game’s silent hero, wakes up in his mother’s house. She drops him off to school and everything seems mundane and real. However, the calm doesn’t last.
Kris finds himself dropping into the strange world of the underground from a dark supply closet. It’s a world of puzzles, enemies, and monsters built by Undertale. The game continues with its tradition of kindness and the lack of violence. It has the same hellish battles and non-violent combats. But as new chapters arrive, the emotional and mechanical complexity continues to grow.
Chapters 1 and 2 are already available, with Chapter 1 setting the stage through a dramatic cliffhanger. Chapter 2 expands the characters and stakes, building excitement for what’s next.
Chapters 3 and 4 are launching together in June, bringing major story progress and new gameplay mechanics.
Deltarune has the same characters as Undertale?
One of the best parts about Deltarune is that it is ideal for fans of Undertale while holding the ability to create a new fanbase. A few characters do make an appearance, but they never take the spotlight away from Deltarune’s primary characters. Toby Fox has added the right amount of references and allusions, most of which are only noticeable by hardcore Undertale enthusiasts.
Is Deltarune finished?
The full story is planned across seven chapters. With two chapters already out and two more coming soon, the saga is well underway.
